In 1892, 18 area businessmen leased 55 acres around Crystal Lake to create a private retreat for hunting and fishing. At that time, the only way to reach the club was via the L&N Railroad. As accessibility improved, Ryland became a place for families. Cottages were built, the clubhouse became the center of the “family” and Ryland grew, with golf and tennis becoming favored leisure activities. Today, Ryland covers 492 acres, which include four large lakes, that are enjoyed by its 86 member families. Ryland features a deceptively challenging 9-hole golf course. Alternate tees create the opportunity for 18-hole play. Members enjoy unlimited play as part of their membership dues, and greens fees for guests are modest. Limited course play means no tee times and a pace of play that suits both experienced and new players. Club sponsored events run throughout the season, including organized social and championship play. Ryland’s golf course is limited to play by members and their invited guests. The Ryland Clubhouse is a focal point for the member community. Whether for a casual lunch after a round of golf or the traditional Friday Night Buffet, the Clubhouse is where members and their guests mingle to enjoy one another’s company. The Chef de Cuisine serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner six days a week during summer months, with reduced hours in the off-season. Food service is available for special occasions or private parties hosted by members. Only Club members can reserve the clubhouse, which guarantees that it is always available for its members. Ryland also offers a variety of other amenities, including lighted tennis courts, shuffleboard, and basketball to keep members active from spring through fall. Fish are bountiful in Ryland’s four lakes, and to encourage children to take up the sport, there is even a “Kids Only” fishing pond. Crystal Lake features a “swimming pool” and party deck. During summers, children can participate in a member-organized summer program that includes swim instruction, sports lessons, and other fun activities. The highlight of the summer is Ryland’s 4th of July Celebration which features a morning footrace, a parade that features fire engines and decorated golf carts, a Midway with games for youngsters, pool games, and concludes with a fireworks display. Ryland’s 4th of July Celebration has been a tradition for friends and families for almost 100 years! |
